"I Can" Succeed with CCSS

When I hear the phrase, Common Core State Standards I still get butterflies in my stomach..no lie.  However, this year my district has invested in Wonders a CCSS aligned ELA curriculum and I'm thrilled with it so far! If any of you out there have this same series, I'd love to talk with you and see how it's working for you!

In an effort to make myself more comfortable with these new standards I had typed up the 'I Can' statements for third grade to fit into a little pocket chart back in May.  My thought had been to become more fluent in these standards AND to serve as a reminder to myself on the end of the year goal.  When we came back to school our principal announced that she would like us to post the "I Can" statements our class is working on in our classroom as a means to help the students become aware of our standards...DONE-ZO!

So, here they hang on my little $1 pocket from Target.  They're not the cutest things in the world, but I wanted my font to be as large as I could make it.  I printed the math "I Can" statements on green and the ELA statements in pink to serve as some sort of visual organization.  I WOULD share them with you, but the wording is not mine...and I just don't feel right about it.

I CAN tell you that I also added an "I Can" section to my weekly classroom newsletter to help familiarize parents with the new standards as well.

Has your school started the transition to CCSS yet? What sorts of things are you doing to help ease you and your students' prepare for 'THE CHANGE'??

  1. I am not really sure about the America CCSS. In Australia we have a Board of Studies which issues a curriculum all schools must teach. Teachers program the curriculum for their students through units of work they design for their students. Our programs are school property and each school is inspected for registration regularly. Are your CCSS similar to our curriculum subject documents?

  2. We are implementing Common Core standards this year. I have a meeting EVERY Tuesday until 5:00 about Common Core...one week it's Math and the next it's ELA. After 6 weeks of it, we move to every other Tuesday until the end of the year and it's back at every Tuesday. Ick!

I also purchased a set of "I Can" statements on TPT for 5th grade.

  3. We started moving to CCSS that past couple of years starting with Kindergarten. K-2 are now in full implementation. Right now 3-5 is doing a blended curriculum until next year. We will still do our state testing this year and next year will be full implementation with possibly the PARCC. It hasn't fully been decided. I know Michigan pulled out of CCSS at the end of the summer. It will be interesting to see if anyone else does. There is a lot of controversy right now with the CCSS. I love your " I Can" Succeed board. Very colorful and eye catching, Ms. Sassy thing!
